Color Is...

A Better Color System…In Less Colors

Spring 2007 marked the introduction of our current color system – the Color Is color system.  Our color system was developed over the course of 18 months and represents a great step forward in the color selection process.  As part of the development of the Color Is system, all of the popular color systems in the market were surveyed with the goal of producing a color system that addresses the needs of as many people as possible without overwhelming, as well as looking forward to future popular colors.  The results can be seen in the beautiful 1,320 colors that are displayed in all of the Miller Paint stores throughout Oregon and Washington.

The tools ...

In addition to the Color Chips, Fandeck, and Architect Kit, Miller Paint has a couple of other color tools at our disposal to help keep the color selection process moving.

The Webdecks, available for Color Is... and Historic Colours, are a great way to preview the colors available in the comfort of your own home, and the ColorVisualizer program (available as a download) is a great way to get a good idea of how a color could look amongst your own surroundings.

About the color display ...

It is easy to locate the color you are looking for as this system is organized by color family.  Rather than being laid out in the traditional rainbow pattern, this system takes advantage of a zig zag layout where colors flow in the same manner as found in a color wheel. For example yellow is next to orange, which if you continue the pattern is next to the red family and so on.

The pivot point of the system places the brightest and most chromatic colors at the center of the display.  As you work your way outward toward the end of the display, colors become less chromatic or more muted. The bottom level is reserved for the neutrals versions of all of these families and is separated warm on the left and cool on the right.
