COLOR TOUR: Portland Modern Slender House
The Slender House in Portland’s Mississippi Neighborhood just got a colorful update by Wendy Scott Design and will be featured on the 2023 Portland Modern Home Tour. According to the tour website, “the existing structure has been given a fresh face with updates to walls, tile, art, furniture and more. This home provided the perfect blank slate to bring in colorist Kristin Van Buskirk of Woonwinkel for consultation on a color palette that harmonizes with the existing architectural material palette by Waechter Architecture.”
Lagoon Lullaby | R078
Step into the Slender House to a playful, textured living room that’s painted in Lagoon Lullaby | R078 from Miller Paint’s Northwest Color Collection.
"The mural on the neighboring building and the owner's colorful furniture in the living room gave me clues before even speaking to the client that they might be interested in carrying the bold mural inside the home as well, and they sure were,” muses interior designer Wendy Scott. Deep blue Lagoon Lullaby | R078 is contrasted by bright accessories from Woonwinkel and a painting commissioned for the space by local artist Mandy Kavanaugh.
Artisan marble tile by Pratt + Larson serves as backsplash and focal point in the updated kitchen.
Raven Grass | R072
Colors in the marble tile are enriched by the contrast of Raven Grass | R072 on this kitchen accent wall. This deep green from our Northwest Color Collection has the drama of black with even more intrigue.
Meraki | R108

The stairway to the second floor is adorned with a colorful abstract mural by artist Racheal Jackson. Racheal selected a vibrant range of hues from the Northwest Color Collection including Glendale | 0758, Spring Forest | 0738, Fresh Water | R076, Hue is the Artist? | R115, Baby Vegetable | 0753, Weekend Retreat | 0035, Sari | 1066, Sweet Baby Rose | 1067.
Kind Kiss | R122
The guest bathroom got an update with fresh coat of Kind Kiss | R122, a sweet color that is right in between pink and purple.
Chickpea Please | R128
For the light-filled primary bedroom, Kristin and Wendy chose Chickpea Please | R128 for the walls and ceiling. "The client brought two nature images to use as color inspiration. I was delighted to see that they were full of rich color and exciting contrasts; they directly inspired the palette of the walls and the accessories,” recalls Kristin. Designer lighting and curated home goods from Woonwinkel complete the space.
Another stunning mural by Rachael Jackson was installed in the Slender House’s primary bathroom and elevates the space with color. This piece features the same hues from the Northwest Color Collection as the stairway mural: Glendale | 0758, Spring Forest | 0738, Fresh Water | R076, Hue is the Artist? | R115, Baby Vegetable | 0753, Weekend Retreat | 0035, Sari | 1066, and Sweet Baby Rose | 1067.
