COLOR TOUR: An Artist’s Studio in Portland

Pujis_Mura_0003_Miller Sept22 Pujis Mural+House01 (3)

Inside this sweet converted garage in Portland’s St. Johns neighborhood is a multi-use space that now houses a ceramic studio, a sleeping loft, and den. Puji Sherer and her husband Oliver cherish the extra square footage the studio brings as their backyard ADU home tops out at just under 400 sq ft. You can take a tour of their little house here.

Puji uses the front of the studio to create handmade ceramics- a passion that allows her to explore color, texture, and form.  The back section of the studio has a cozy den with a low ceiling that becomes a sleeping loft above.

With the garage door open, light and fresh air fill the studio.  Ceramic tools, glazes and molds fill the workspace.

Puji’s handmade ceramics begin to dry after texture and pattern has been carved into the soft clay.  Once fully dry, these small plates will make their way into the kiln for a bisque firing and then they will be ready for glazing. The Northwest Color Collection is full of complex neutrals that take their cues from nature and natural materials. Check out Gloomy Weather | R016 for a color that matches Portland skies and unfired earthenware.

The studio has thoughtful small-living details like skylights for extra light and a custom wooden ladder for easy access to the sleeping loft. Texture and interest are created with Puji’s hand-painted mural that spans both walls of the lower level den, defining the small hang-out space. For a full list of the colors Puji used in her mural here.
